Katowice – a city shaped by science, culture and change
Located in the heart of Upper Silesia, Katowice is a
city of dynamic transformation and bold ambitions. Once defined
by heavy industry and coal mining, today it stands as a symbol of
innovation, cultural revitalisation, and scientific excellence.
In recognition of its dynamic evolution and scientific potential,
Katowice has been awarded the prestigious title of European City
of Science 2024 – the first city in Central Europe to receive
this honour. It has also hosted major international events,
including the UN Climate Summit (COP24) and the World Urban Forum
(WUF11), highlighting its growing role as a centre for global
dialogue on science, policy, and sustainability.
Katowice lies at the heart of Upper Silesia – a region with a
distinct cultural heritage shaped by Polish, Czech, and German
influences. This historically industrial area is home to one of
Poland's largest ethnic minorities, the Silesians, many of whom
maintain their unique language and traditions. Once defined by
coal mining and metallurgy, Upper Silesia has embraced a new
direction, combining its rich industrial legacy with a growing
focus on innovation, education, and environmental responsibility.
The region's strong sense of identity and community continues to
play a vital role in shaping its social and cultural landscape
today.
A key feature of Katowice is its blend of tradition and
modernity. The Culture Zone, developed on the site of former
industrial grounds, now houses iconic institutions such as the
Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, the International
Congress Centre and the Silesian Museum, in which the meetings of
the first day of the Congress of the Polish Society of Social
Communication will be held co-organized by the Institute of
Journalism and Media Communication at the University of Silesia.
This area symbolises the city's commitment to cultural
regeneration, scientific growth, and international exchange.
Katowice has seven public universities, offering a full spectrum
of disciplines in science, arts and humanities. This strong
academic foundation positions the city as a major research and
education hub in the region. Katowice also ranks among Poland's
top student-friendly cities, noted for its quality of education,
affordability, and vibrant urban life.
Sustainability plays a key role in Katowice's new identity. Over
40% of the city is covered by forests, and policies supporting
clean transport, air quality, and energy efficiency have helped
shape it into one of Poland's greenest urban centres.
Today, Katowice is a thriving European city that combines
scientific excellence, cultural depth, and sustainable urban
development. It is a place where tradition meets innovation, and
where the future of science is shaped in dialogue with history,
people, and the environment.
You are cordially invited to visit Katowice during the 7th
Congress of the Polish Society of Social Communication
co-organised by the Institute of Journalism and Media
Communication of the University of Silesia!
