The 7th PCA Congress

HUMAN AT THE CENTER OF CONTEMPORARY MEDIA TRANSFORMATION

Katowice, September 22-24, 2025

Invitation

Uniwersytet Gdański
The 7th Congress of the the Polish Communication Association will be devoted to the anthropocentric dimension of media transformation. Today, after many technological revolutions, we are experiencing a breakthrough related to artificial intelligence, changing our reality on many social, communicational and ethical levels. And it is this change that raises many questions about the functioning of humans in the modern world. In research and discussions about our existence in the world, we want to answer the question: what do we receive as media senders and recipients, and what are we being deprived of? How does this particular social moment change the functions of the media, their systems of norms and responsibility, and traditional media and digital media? At the next congress, we want to consider the following: do technological changes taking place in the world of media provide opportunities for the development of positive values in the individual and social dimension, or do they rather constitute a step towards the dehumanization of contemporary culture and an adverse change in the media ecosystem?
The research perspective will focus on, among others, the idea of the metaverse, social influence implemented through persuasive influence, including disinformation, digital narcissism, and the change in the ecosystem of functioning mass media, both traditional and digital. At the same time, we will address issues related to the benefits of technological changes in everyday human life regarding health, education, professional work, social interactions, personal development, mobility, and many others. It is also worth paying attention to the social, economic, political and cultural transformations in the national and global dimension, which are generated by dynamic technological changes. We propose a broad thematic scope of scientific reflection on the anthropocentric perspective of media transformation, including:
  • Relationships between humans and the information environment and its changes under the influence of the media
  • Mediatization and digitalization processes in the public sphere
  • Cultural influence of contemporary media
  • Issues of digital addiction
  • Media analytics, big data and data journalism
  • Contemporary political parallelism
  • Algorithmically stimulated media consumption by individuals and society
In the seventh edition of the congress, we propose a broad perspective on the issues of strengthening social resilience and ensuring information security, as well as the potential scenarios for the development of artificial intelligence and its impact on the communication of individuals and society. We want to capture the threats, but also the opportunities and possibilities that result from the observed transformation, and the anthropocentric nature of the congress creates the opportunity to present previous research but also opens the field to set new directions for research on the individual in the contemporary media world. The Polish Communication Association Congresses are the most important events of the Polish media studies community. They primarily integrate Polish media researchers from different research paradigms and build a new research discipline – the science of social communication and media. They also aim to unite the community of communication researchers and practitioners.
